Panchang times after midnight: what 25:42 and 27:12 mean
A Panchang entry can show 25:42. It means 01:42 on the following civil day. Subtract 24 from the hour and keep the minutes. The notation keeps an overnight time beside the calendar day to which the Panchang entry belongs.
The January backside record supplied for this site explains that hours continue past midnight until the next sunrise. The examples here follow that convention. The figures are hours and minutes, not decimal hours.
Convert the hour, then check the date
Read 25.42 as 25 hours and 42 minutes. Subtracting 24 hours gives 01:42. If it appears against 1 January 2027, the civil-clock reading is 01:42 on 2 January. For 27.12, the result is 03:12 on the following date.
| Printed time | Civil-clock reading | If listed against 1 January |
|---|---|---|
| 13.09 | 13:09 / 1:09 PM | 1 January 2027 |
| 23.30 | 23:30 / 11:30 PM | 1 January 2027 |
| 24.15 | 00:15 / 12:15 AM | 2 January 2027 |
| 25.42 | 01:42 / 1:42 AM | 2 January 2027 |
| 27.12 | 03:12 / 3:12 AM | 2 January 2027 |
Examples from the January record
The 1 January backside record gives the end of Vanija Karana as २५.४२. That becomes 01:42 on 2 January. The 2 January row gives the end of Bava Karana as २७.१२, which becomes 03:12 on 3 January. The date attached to the row is essential in both cases.
Copy the field name with the time. “Karana ends at 01:42 on 2 January” is clearer than “1 January, 1:42.”
Do not convert a time twice
A website may already display “01:42 next day.” The conversion has happened. Keep the next-day label and do not subtract 24 again. A publication using AM/PM may use a different way to show the date, so read its own notation note.
These examples use Indian Standard Time. Someone abroad needs the date and timezone before adding a reminder. A timezone conversion can change the local civil date again.
The notation tells you how to read a timestamp attached to an entry. It does not decide which ritual to perform or prescribe its timing.
