How to read a Marathi calendar: dates, tithi and festival notes

A Marathi calendar puts several kinds of information inside a small date box. The large numeral is the civil date. Smaller text may name a lunar month, a tithi, a festival or the time when a Panchang entry ends. Read those parts separately before putting an occasion in your diary.

The monthly image gives the whole month at a glance. The tables beneath it make an individual date easier to read on a phone. The daily Panchang table adds details that do not always fit inside the image.

Check the year and weekday

An older January image can look similar to a 2027 image. The weekdays and religious dates can be different. The civil date 1 January 2027 is a Friday. If a saved January 2027 image places it under Thursday, check the file before using it.

The Marathi numerals १, २ and ३ mean 1, 2 and 3. After finding the civil date, read the smaller line. मार्गशीर्ष कृ. ९ names Margashirsha, Krishna Paksha and the ninth tithi. It does not mean 9 January.

Read an actual daily entry

The site’s 1 January 2027 front record contains मार्गशीर्ष कृ. ९. The detailed record writes it as मार्गशीर्ष कृ. नवमी and gives an end time of १३.०९. Those are a short and a fuller label for the same calendar entry. Under the record’s time convention, 13:09 is 1:09 PM.

A tithi end time belongs to the tithi beside it. It is not automatically the start time of a festival elsewhere in the box. Read the event line for a separate time.

Keep the labels separate

A festival name tells you what is listed. The weekday places it in your working week. A Shubh Divas note is a separate annotation. None of those labels alone confirms whether your school, bank or office will close.

Keep the month, paksha and tithi together when copying a religious date. The abbreviations शु. and कृ. distinguish Shukla and Krishna Paksha. A number can appear in both halves of the lunar month.

If the image and its daily table disagree, note the date and both readings and report the difference through the contact page. Do not choose whichever version is more convenient.
